Labrix

Learn All About:

Labrix was founded with the simple goal of achieving quality hormone testing, taking into consideration the clinicians’ and the scientists’ need for precision and reliability of the tools of the trade while preserving the quality and integrity of samples and their subsequent test results. Founders Jay H. Mead, MD, FASCP and Erin T. Lommen, ND have between them over 40 years of clinical practice on top of Dr. Mead’s 25 years in laboratory medicine.

Today Labrix is a respected name in the hormone testing industry, having set high standards for accuracy, reliability and turnaround times in saliva testing. They also offer urinary neurotransmitter testing in conjunction with hormone panels to cover the functional interrelationship between sex hormones, adrenal hormones and neurotransmitters.

CLIA certified Labrix Clinical Services, Inc. is based in the Pacific Northwest but is certified to test in the State of New York, a distinct achievement in itself.

Labrix Products

Labrix products fall under 3 main categories, namely:

Hormones and neurotransmitters are both chemical messengers that ensure the smooth inner-workings of this amazing machine we call the human body. They influence our eating patterns, sexual desires, sleep cycle, learning abilities, our growth and development etc. Ideally they are in a constant state of perfect balance, but certain hormone imbalances cannot be avoided with the onset of age, exposure to daily stressors, poor diet and genetic factors. They can both be restored to a state of balance by careful treatment using combinations of proper supplementation, dietary changes and special formulations 1.

The first step towards restoring neurotransmitter and hormone balance is to establish what imbalances there are. Understand what goes on in your body. Labrix is a hormone and neurotransmitter testing laboratory with products that are specifically designed to help you do this. Labrix products measure cortisol and sex hormones with saliva, and neurotransmitters with urine.

COLLECTION METHOD

  • SALIVA Collection

Saliva is proving to be a most reliable medium for measuring hormone levels. Specimen collection is easy, non-invasive and can be done in the convenience and privacy of one’s home. With saliva hormone testing, only the hormones that are actively delivered to their receptors are measured. These are the bio-available hormones that provide an accurate glimpse into the body’s active hormone levels. Of course, proper collection is critical to the accuracy of results and Labrix provides very detailed saliva collection instructions with each sample collection kit.

Preparation

  • Wash hands and rid the mouth of any food residue by rinsing thoroughly.
  • Start collecting 10 minutes after rinsing mouth.
  • The night before collecting saliva, wash face before bedtime but do not apply any lotions or creams that night or the morning of the collection. These products contain chemicals that may affect the test results.
  • Refrain from flossing, brushing or doing any dental works 30 minutes before collection as some bleeding may occur, thereby affecting the results.
  • Collect the first saliva sample within 30 minutes upon waking up. Begin timing upon waking even if you don’t get up right away.
  • Do not eat at least 1 hour prior to collecting to avoid contaminating the sample with food particles.

Collection Steps

  •   Let saliva pool in your mouth for a few minutes and slowly let it flow into the provided tubes directly or by using the straws that also come with the kit.
  •   Fill each tube about ¾ full. Foam or bubbles are okay.
  •   When done, snap the tube lid shut.
  •   Dispose of all straws.
  •   Pack the tubes back into the box for shipping.

Collection Times

The collection tubes are color coded according to what time of the day they are to be used.

  •   Pink/Purple Tube - 30 minutes upon waking
  •   Green Tube – before lunch
  •   Orange Tube – before dinner
  •   Blue Tube – at least 1 hour after dinner or just before bedtime

Guidelines for Women

Women of menstruating age – collect saliva during the mid-luteal phase.

Post-menopausal women or those who have had a hysterectomy – collect saliva any day of the month

Women on birth control or taking hormone replacement:

  •   If taking topical hormones – at least 12-24 hours before collecting the first saliva sample, stop applying any topical hormones as they will cause sample contamination and affect the results.
  •   If taking pills or oral hormones – take as usual on collection day.
  •   If using sublingual hormones – do not use them at all on collection day. There should be at least 24-36 hours after the last dose before you can collect saliva.
  •   If taking cortisol supplements – All cortisol supplements should stop at least 5 days before day of saliva collection.

Guidelines for Men

If NOT taking any hormones – collect saliva any day.

Men on hormone therapy:

  • If taking topical hormones - at least 12-24 hours before collecting the first saliva sample, stop applying any topical hormones as they will cause sample contamination and affect the results.

  • URINE Collection

Prior to collecting urine for neurotransmitter testing, avoid eating and drinking fluids with alcohol or any flavoring as they can increase neurotransmitter activity. Exercise also affects norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin production. An ideal urine sample for neurotransmitter testing is that which was collected at a time when nothing could have caused an increase in neurotransmitter activity.

          Preparation

  • DO NOT eat or drink anything (except water, but only until bedtime) 12-hours before urine collection.
  • DO NOT smoke, exercise or take any medication 12 hours before urine collection.
  • DO NOT collect urine during menstruation.
  • DO NOT use the first urine of the day. Collect the 2nd at least 1 hour upon waking but no later than 4 hours after getting up.
  • Prepare to ship sample immediately after collection, otherwise keep it in the freezer and ship the next day.
  • If collection day falls on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, keep sample in freezer and ship on Monday.
  • Make sure you know where the nearest UPS store or drop box is located. The collection kit has a prepaid UPS shipping label. The sample must get to the lab within 7 days from collection.

Collecting Urine

  • Collect midstream into the collection cup provided in the kit.
  • Transfer the urine to the sample tube using the pipette provided. Fill the tube up to the 10ml mark. DO NOT remove the cotton ball inside the tube, it is a preservative. If it falls out, DO NOT let it get in contact with bare skin. It can irritate the skin and eyes. Sometimes there is no visible cotton ball inside. It may have melted because of the HCl in the tube. That is fine. You can still use that tube.
  • Seal the tube tightly and shake it gently 3-4 times to mix the urine and preservative thoroughly.
  • Complete all the information required on the label and stick it on the tube.
  • Ship the sample to the lab promptly.

These genes are known to significantly impact the metabolism of fats and carbohydrates and responsiveness to physical activity. This test is especially useful for people who have been struggling with weight issues.

Labrix Bone Density Test

Urinary Deoxypyridinoline (DPD)

This test benefits people who suspect they may be suffering from osteoporosis, putting them at higher risk of broken bones. Gone are the days when bone density tests are detected only after a person breaks a bone and even then only by X-rays that measure how many grams of calcium and other bone minerals are packed in a bone segment. These days urine DPD is used as a bone marker for bone matrix degradation and bone resorption. Higher urinary DPD levels mean increased rates of bone degradation.
